Here are some market summaries and stocks to watch for Tues, Jun 6, 2006: Oil, ethanol, markets, data storage, municipal Wi-Fi:

  • NEWS:
  • Oil is up even more. However, Iran has tentatively agreed to an offer from the US to help them develop nuclear weapons. Ethanol is starting to be explored as an alternative, but initial reports from consumers is that ethanol-gasoline mixes have significantly reduced their mileage per tankfull.
  • The Nasdaq, S+P, and Dow were all down today. The Dow was down about 95 points and drop below 11,000, but later recovered to just over 11,000.
  • STOCKS:
    • With the increasing number of muncipalities in North America heading towards citywide Wi-Fi network access to the Internet, it’s worth watching the stock of those companies that are involved in the process.
    • There are a lot of choices for free web-based email services these days, and many of them offer 1 Gigabyte or more of space. In addition, there are numerous websites that offer free storage for photos, music, and audio and video podcasting. Keep an eye on the stocks of companies that offer large-scale NAS (Network-Attached Storage) systems. (More details in the future.)
    • In similar vein, there’s been an explosion of consumer electronics devices that use those little pluggable memory cards (5 or 6 types at last count). These cards are growing in memory capacity, and I feel that they’ll be ubiquitous, to the point of maybe even being used in home appliances such as home heating/ cooling systems, blenders, toasters and so on. This is not due to anything I’ve read but rather my active imagination. Watch the stocks of memory card companies. (More details in the future.)
